THE OPPORTUNITY

The Structural Detailer Internship will provide industry experience preparing shop drawings of joists, girders, and decking from architectural and structural drawings. In addition, you will draw sections and details of connections and generate Bill of Materials for fabrication. 

If you are a college student working towards a degree in construction management, engineering, or architecture then this is the program for you. You will have the opportunity to work with veteran construction leaders and industry experts with decades of experience that are excited to share their experience and knowledge with you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare detailed drawings and/or modifications on existing/new designs using Structural software to produce consistent, coordinated, and complete designs and documentation
  • Shop drawing production to include: General notes, joists, girders, decking, wall, roof, and flashing details
  • Operates office and related equipment such as, computers, fax machine, copiers, blueprinting machine, plotter and other like equipment regularly
  • Generates a "bill of materials" for joists, girders, decking and flashing
  • Assists in developing new design concepts and/or process selection
  • Resolves problems involving design and/or system compatibility of drawings
  • Provides technical expertise and assists in the training of entry-level employees, within the department
  • Reads and understands blueprints
  • Perform other duties as assigned
COMPETENCIES
  • Analytical, detail oriented, organized, flexible, poised, able to balance tasks and time effectively
  • High degree of spatial awareness to envisage how the steel goes together and interacts with other elements
  • Proactive/self-starter: Structural, AutoCAD 2D & 3D, Revit and detailing skills to effectively meet the needs of the department
  • Proficient using and learning software
  • Regularly utilizes general and advanced math skills, including algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Strong written and oral communication, with co-workers, customers and vendors
  • Solid customer service and interpersonal relations skills

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and technical school, or Structural certification preferred
  • 3 years’ experience required using Structural, proficient with general drafting, and AutoCAD
  • Strong math skills in algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Knowledge of 3D software (Inventor, Tekla, etc.)
  • Microsoft software skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and Bluebeam a plus
  • Experience in structural steel, engineering, construction or related areas
  • Performs essential duties safely and efficiently
  • Proficient with detailing, checking and product knowledge of steel joists & steel deck
